Document that Portugal signed and ratified in July 2009, reaffirming the universal principles of dignity, integrality, equality and non-discrimination on which it is based; defines the general obligations of governments concerning the integration of the various dimensions of disability into their policies, as well as the specific obligations relating to raising society’s awareness of disability, combating stereotypes and valuing persons with disabilities. Its purpose is ‘to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity’ (CRPD, Article 1).
