International Week of the Deaf

September is International Week of the Deaf. This year the theme of the World Federation of the Deaf is "Sign up for Sign Language Rights".
Deaf people from different countries are mobilized at this time to boost initiatives on topics such as inclusive education, sign languages, the resilience and diversity of the deaf community, deaf culture and the future.
In Portugal, it is usually celebrated, in September, a number of initiatives related to the Deaf People,Starting with the 20 September and extends to on the last Sunday of the month, in particular:
  • 20 - Day of the Constitutional Recognition of Llanguage Gcurrent PPortuguese

The Portuguese Sign Language is recognized in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic don 20 September 1997, by Law No 1/97, Article 74(h) of which states ‘Protect and enhance the value of Portuguese sign language as a cultural expression and an instrument of access to education and equal opportunities’.
This milestone History is due the Commission for the Recognition and Protection of the Portuguese Sign Language and Defense of the Rights of Deaf People (CRPLGPDDPS), created on November 15, 1995. Ethe Commission had other designationswhich did not yet include areas such as the defense of rights of deaf people, as it was initially centered on the LGP.
The CRPLGPDDPS included associations of the deaf, families, LGP interpreters, among others, and it was thanks to his work that the Constitutional Recognition of the PML was possible on September 20, 1997.
  • 23 - International Day of Gestual Languages

The celebration of this date began in 2018, by proposal of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), adopted by consensus by the UN General Assembly in its Resolution A/RES/72/161, on December 19, 2017.

This event is part of the International Week of the Deaf.

In Portugal, we celebrate our sign language, the Portuguese Sign Language, LGP.

  • 24 - Foundation Day of the Portuguese Association of the Deaf and National Day of the Deaf

National Day of the Deaf, the Day of the Deaf. This date refere-se the foundation of the Portuguese Association of the Deaf (APS), on 24 September 1958, and that celebrates its 66th anniversary. PHC is currently the oldest active association in Portugal.

The Portuguese Association of the Deaf is an entage trainer certified by DGERT, providing training courses in Portuguese Sign Language and boosting various initiatives.

  • 29 - World Day of the Deaf

World Day of the Deaf is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of September.
On this date, the different organizations of the association movement of deaf people around the world are encouraged to promote actions that contribute to the satisfaction of the needs of deaf people, in the defense of their rights in order to achieve equal opportunities in society.
World Deaf Day was first observed in 1958 by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), an international non-governmental organization dedicated to defending and improving the rights and quality of life of the deaf community.
As a way to sensitize society about this day, many organizations of deaf people, schools, colleges and universities carry out various initiatives alluding to the day.
