Practical Handbook on Equality of Persons with Disabilities in the Media

UNESCO recently launched the Practical Handbook on Equality of Persons with Disabilities in the Media (2024) available here in eight languages: Arabic, English, French, Khmer, Mongolian, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian. It also launched, in the English language, the UNESCO Global Outlook on Racism and Discrimination (2024), available here.

O Practical Handbook on Equality of Persons with Disabilities in the Media provides media organisations, and all entities producing communication content, with concrete guidance on developing fair editorial policies, producing accessible information and media content, and adopting inclusive management practices.

The document also serves as a self-assessment tool for reporters, editors, producers, technical staff and managers, offering practical attachments with checklists, case studies, visual guides and references for additional studies. This feature also offers practical recommendations on inclusive language, interview techniques, crisis reporting, accessible communication production and workplace diversity.

To complement the manual, UNESCO has also developed a series of Master Classes consisting of thirteen video modules, with sign language interpretation available in English and Mongolian. Master Class Series on Disability Equality e Master Class Series against Racism and Discrimination.

These resources are already widely used by UNESCO’s local offices to support capacity building in the media sector, also serving as a valuable tool for media professionals seeking to enrich their work in preparing the celebrations of 3 December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and to complement work on disability.
