São Brás de Alportel celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Updated : 10/12/2020
The Municipality of São Brás de Alportel marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December with the conference ‘São Brás de Alportel Acessível: Inclusion, Challenges”.
An online conference, which sought to be accessible to all, as part of the ‘São Brás Acessível para todos’ plan, promoted a reflection on the challenges of accessibility that already exist in our homes: where we live, where we work and where we are a community.
How to design, without any barriers, the houses and spaces where we live and work? How to adapt roads, equipment or transport? How to remove language and communication barriers?
This was the motto that inspired a conversation that the municipality intended to be unpretentious, open and accessible to all, with the special participation of Diogo Martins, former president of the Centro de Vida Independente Association.
Accessibility as an essential requirement for the public character of spaces, the right to housing and the need to give a voice to people with disabilities in the decision-making processes involving all these issues were the focus of his intervention.
The following also participated in this conference: Teresa Bernardino, responsible for the Inclusion Office of the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel and Marta Santos, responsible for the Municipal Office of Urban Rehabilitation.
“A House for All” was an initiative of the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel, coordinated by the Planning and Urban Planning Unit, and in partnership with the Inclusion Desk – Social Services.
Also as a symbolic celebration of the International Day of the Person with Disabilities, on 3 December, the project "De Armido" was also born, and on this day an application was submitted to the @tivos Citizens Program, of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Bissaya Barreto Foundation, whose main objective is to build a more participatory and inclusive community, contributing to the empowerment and promotion of the active citizenship of persons with disabilities and/or disabilities.
