April 23 - National Day of Deaf Education and Deaf Youth
Updated : 23/04/2021
The 23rd of April aims to recall the importance of the Education of Deaf People, as a determining factor for their personal development and social inclusion.
History shows that the deaf community has always claimed the right to learn and teach, within the scope of the Rights to Education.
In the current vision of inclusive education, we consider the importance of bilingual schools in this process, which are based on the fact that Deaf People live a bilingual and bicultural condition, that is, they live in their daily lives with two languages: the sign language and culture of the deaf community in your country and the oral language and culture of the listening people.
Thus, it is agreed that, in education, deaf children should have the right to bilingual education, firstly, the teaching / learning of the Portuguese Sign Language and, secondly, the Portuguese Language.
