May 1 - World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day

It is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of the month of May, the World Ankylosing Spondylitis DayTherefore, in 2021, it falls on 1 May.

This event seeks to sensitize society to the Rights of People with this rheumatic disease, in the areas of prevention, rehabilitation, participation and social inclusion.

Ankylosing spondylitis mainly affects the joints of the spine. Unlike other rheumatic diseases, it is young adults, especially men, who suffer most from the disease. In general, it manifests itself before the age of 45, appearing gradually in the form of lumbar pain and stiffness, which worsen with rest and attenuate with physical activity, and may in some cases reach other joints, in particular the hips and shoulders.

It is estimated that this pathology affects about 50,000 Portuguese.
