June 4 is the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, which aims to draw society's attention to the traumatic reality of children experiencing war, sexual violence or deprivation of their most basic rights. This event was adopted by the UN through Resolution ES-7/8 of 19 August 1982. With regard to children with disabilities, Article 16 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities commits States Parties to adopt legislation and policies to identify, investigate and prosecute all situations of exploitation, violence and abuse.

In Portugal, the Instituto de Apoio à Criança provides the SOS-Criança service (national number: 116 111), as an anonymous and confidential service, in support of Children, Youth, Families, Professionals and Community, nationally and internationally.

This service aims to support children at risk, mistreated and/or sexually abused, missing, disintegrated at school, with conflicts with parents, who feel rejected or have suicidal ideas, seeking to find solutions to these problem situations.

As a society, we must reflect on the protection and education of all children and raise awareness of the civic responsibility of each one of us in denouncing any form of violence against them.
