Watch Your Back Campaign marks Global Year on Column Pain

2021 is the Global Year sthe Pain in the Column International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP).
The Global Year on Column Pain has four goals:
- Identify barriers and propose solutions to improve the prevention, investigation and treatment of back pain;
- Summarize the most effective and cost-effective modalities for successful management of back pain, particularly in low-resource communities;
- Integrate the use of tools to signal people with back pain in order to manage care delivery;
- Facilitate research, management, education and defense mechanisms to reduce the overall impact of back pain.
The European Pain Federation (EFIC) and the Portuguese Association for the Study of Pain (APED) have joined this campaign.
About 80% of the world's population will have at least one episode or crisis of back pain in their lifetime, and spinal diseases are already the leading cause of disability. Unfortunately, the lockdown period and adaptation to teleworking did not improve the situation.
"It is essential to alert to the regular practice of physical exercise and, in situations of prolonged pain, it is imperative to seek medical advice," said Bruno Santiago, neurosurgeon and coordinator of the national campaign. “Look at your back”.
In the vast majority of cases, back pain is of muscular origin, being among the main causes of absenteeism from work.
School-age children also suffer from back pain.
