Lisbon City Council approves recognition to Commander José Eduardo Gaspar Arruda

The Lisbon Municipal Assembly, in its session held on 12 December 2024, deliberated and approved by majority Recommendation No 145/02 (PEV) – ‘Attribution of toponymic homage to José Eduardo Gaspar Arruda’ (deceased on 26 January 2019).
Signed by the ENP Municipal Group, recognise the contributions to the rights of persons with disabilities in Portugal and the city of Lisbon made by José Eduardo Gaspar Arruda. As well as considering a fair future toponymic tribute to José Eduardo Gaspar Arruda, considering that 2024 celebrated a gloss of his death.
Commander José Eduardo Gaspar Arruda was involved in the movement of people with disabilities, having integrated several national non-governmental organisations where he has been a leader since ADFA – Association of the Disabled in the Armed Forces, ACAPO – Association of the Blind and Amblyopic People of Portugal, FPDD – Portuguese Federation of Sport for Persons with Disabilities, APOIAR – Association for the Support of Former Combatants Victims of War Stress, and AJOV – Young Value Association, and international CPAE – Standing Committee for European Affairs, FMAC – World Federation of Former Combatants of War Victims, coordinated the South European Working Group.
He was awarded with the Red Cross of Benemerence and the Red Cross of Merit, with the medal of the National Defense and silver medal of the FMAC, with the Order of Merit, Commander's Degree and the degree of Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
He was a fighter for the cause of persons with disabilities and the fight for human rights, being an advisor to the National Council for Rehabilitation and the National Council for the Rehabilitation and Integration of Persons with Disabilities and Ambassador of the National Institute for Rehabilitation, I.P.
