The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa annually awards prizes in the area of Scientific Research, Social Action, Health and other related areas.

The Santa Casa Neuroscience Awards are intended to promote scientific or clinical research work in the multidisciplinary areas of biosciences, namely neurology, neuropathology, biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular genetics, chemistry, pharmacology, immunology, physiology, and cell biology, among others.

Applications are open until 15 September 2020.

  • O Melo e Castro Award, worth 200 thousand euros, distinguishes the project that enhances the recovery and treatment of vertebro-medullary injuries, territory in which SCML was a pioneer in the country, in 1966, with the opening of the Rehabilitation Medicine Center of Alcoitão. It aims to promote the discovery of solutions for the rehabilitation of affected individuals, significantly reducing the associated motor and physiological limitations.
  • O the Mantero Belard Award, also of 200,000 euros, aims to promote and boost scientific or clinical research in the field of neurodegenerative diseases associated with aging, such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, enabling new strategies in the treatment and restoration of neurological functions.

It also promotes the João Lobo Antunes Award, worth forty thousand euros, intended for medical graduates under a medical boarding school, aims to stimulate scientific culture and clinical research in the area of neurosciences, without forgetting João Lobo Antunes' principle regarding the humanization of the medical act - "his patients and their histories".
