The Access City Award is organised by the European Commission together with the European Disability Forum and is one of the actions set up under the EU Disability Strategy 2010-2020.

It was launched in 2010 to raise awareness of disability and promote accessibility initiatives in European cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants.

This aims to ensure equal access to life in the city for people with disabilities.

Out of the 50 applications, the city of Jönköping in southern Sweden was elected the winner for the continuous improvement of the old and new areas of the city, in collaboration with disability organisations.

The city has also created a local “Access City Award”, for companies or organisations that have worked with their customers to improve accessibility.

The second and third places were awarded to the city of Bremerhaven in Germany and the city of Gdynia in Poland, respectively.

Special mentions were also given:

  • Accessibility of public services in times of pandemic - Poznań, Poland;
  • Accessibility as an opportunity for the whole city – Komotini, Greece;
  • Built environment – Florence, Italy.
