July 11th is World Population Day
Updated : 09/07/2021
World Population Day is celebrated on July 11. This day was proclaimed through the Resolution 45/216 adopted at the United Nations General Assembly on 21 December 1990.
The principles of this day go hand in hand with those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with regard to demographic trends – population growth, ageing, migration and urbanism.
The global population, in general, continues to increase although its growth is uneven. It is estimated that 68% of Earth's inhabitants will live in urban areas by 2050.
According to the most recent Resident Population Estimates of 31 December 2013, 10 427 301 persons resided in Portugal. The resident population projections 2012-2060, produced by INE, indicate that Portugal will lose population by 2060, from the current 10.5 to 8.6 million residents.
Current demographic trends are characterised by a continued increase in life expectancy, a reduction in infant mortality, an increase in emigration, a sharp drop in fertility and the resulting ageing of the population.
According to UN data, approximately 10% of the world's population has some form of disability: Physical Disability, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Hearing Disability, Visual Disability.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said: "In many societies, people with disabilities often end up disconnected, living in isolation and facing discrimination. We must work for a better, inclusive, equitable and sustainable world for all, where the rights of persons with disabilities are fully realised."
