Oil on canvas ‘Waiting for success’.
Updated: 04/06/2025
The Soares dos Reis National Museum presents, under the heading A Peça do Mês – A Escolha do Público (The Public’s Choice), the oil on canvas ‘Esperando o Sucesso’ (Waiting for Success).
This painting is the result of a work developed by Henrique Pousão, in Rome, as a student, having been one of the works sent to the Academia Portuense de Belas Artes as proof of the 2nd year of pension.
Considered one of the greatest in Portuguese painting of the second half of the 19th century, Henrique Pousão died at the age of 25, a victim of tuberculosis. The young artist attended the Academia Portuense de Belas-Artes and was a state pensioner in France and Italy. The painting of paths and streets, courtyards, houses, aspects of Paris, testifies to his creative journey, which culminates in his stays in Rome and Capri.
Landscapes of a poetic and vibrant chromaticism, in light-gathering exercises, genre paintings such as ‘Cecilia’, and portraits such as ‘Lady Dressed in Black’, held already in Paris, reveal its modernity, unusual in the Portuguese artistic landscape.
The commented sessions will take place on 11 June (18.00) and 12 June (13.30).
