International Day For Disaster Risk Redution
Financing Resilience, Not Disasters” is this year’s theme of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (DIRRC).
This theme highlights the importance and urgent need to address the high costs of disasters by focusing investments on disaster risk reduction.
Building on the outcomes of the Oslo Policy Forum, DIRRC 2025 will emphasise two main calls for action:
1.Increase funding for disaster risk reduction, public budgets and international assistance;
2.Ensure that all public and private investments are informed about risks and resilience.
Responding to these two calls can transform the disaster risk landscape by accelerating the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the next 5 years.
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was established by the United Nations in 1989 to raise awareness among governments, organizations and citizens around the world of the need to develop actions that contribute to preventing risks and reducing vulnerabilities, increasing the resilience of communities and the capacity to anticipate and respond to the occurrence of major accidents or disasters.
