International Day of Spinal Injuries.

Updated : 05/09/2019

Today, 5 September, International Vertebral Spine Injury Day, it is important to remember the campaign “Look behind your back”, launched in 2009, with the aim of raising awareness in Portuguese society of the problem of back pain, alerting to its consequences in personal and professional life and educating on existing forms of prevention and treatment.

The campaign has the seal of the Portuguese Society of Pathology of the Vertebral Spine, the Portuguese Society of Neurosurgery, the Portuguese Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology, the Association for the Study of Pain, the Portuguese Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine and has the support of Medtronic.

The main causes of spinal injuries are road accidents. Symptoms may not be immediate and may appear 12 to 24 hours after impact in less severe cases. There may be potential signs of a spinal injury: pain in the neck or back, pain along the arm or leg, difficulty in movement due to lack of strength or changes in sensitivity such as numbness.

It is also important to take special care with falls, especially in the elderly, with diving in shallow areas and with safety in the workplace.
