World Social Security Day
Updated : 07/05/2021
On 8 May, World Social Security Day is celebrated, an event dedicated to reflection on public, solidarity and universal Social Security, from the perspective of quality of life and social cohesion of citizens.
In most countries of the world, Social Security is considered as an asset of workers and plays an important role as an instrument of redistribution of national income.
In Portugal, the law of general bases of the Social Security system (Law No 4/2007 of 16 January 2007), defines the general bases of this system as well as the particular initiatives of similar purposes.
O Article 28 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – “Adequate standard of living and social protection” recognises the right of persons with disabilities to social protection and the enjoyment of that right without discrimination on the basis of disability, including access to state support for disability-related expenses in the framework of training, counselling, financial assistance and adequate care, as well as access to public housing, social and retirement benefits for persons with disabilities.
