Today, May 12, the World Fibromyalgia Day and World Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Mialgic Encephalomyelitis Day, an event that aims to sensitize and raise awareness among patients, family members, health professionals and society in general about Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

This syndrome is characterized by chronic and generalized pain that patients mainly locate in the locomotor system, and is typically related to a wide variety of symptoms, including persistent fatigue, non-restorative sleep, generalized stiffness and anxious-depressive symptoms. Fibromyalgia is one of the main pain-causing conditions, and sleep alteration affects more than 90% of these patients who have a reduced duration of the sleep stage, determines the quality of sleep and ensures the recovery of the body. Fibromyalgia is more common in women, usually between the ages of 35 and 50, and has a major impact on their well-being, quality of life and professional performance. Fibromyalgia has no cure, but the follow-up of patients by a specialist doctor is essential, since it allows the control of the disease and allows a significant improvement of symptoms through appropriate therapy.

To mark this day is to captivate the attention of the greatest number of people to the life challenges of patients living with these diseases that, in so many cases, are not understood by the health team, in their workplaces, by friends and even family. Likewise, celebrating this day is also to raise the awareness of medical and scientific researchers for the advancement of research both regarding the causes of these diseases, as well as in the search for more effective treatments and within the reach of all people living with Fibromyalgia and / or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.
