On August 28, we celebrate the World Turner Syndrome Day, This pathology was first described in 1938 by endocrinologist Henry Turner. The purpose of this date is to raise awareness and sensitize the population about the disease and promote research in this area.
A Turner syndrome It is a genetic disease that affects only women, with an incidence of one in 2,500 girls. It is a chromosomal alteration that consists of the total or partial lack of the X chromosome. Turner syndrome have specific characteristics such as short stature and gonadal dysgenesis, which affects the formation of the ovaries.
Generally, people with Turner syndrome are short in stature during childhood, have a short neck and wide chest, and often suffer from congenital heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, kidney or eye disorders. In newborns, the most obvious thing is swelling in the back of the hands and feet.
In the past, and due to ignorance of the disease, it was said that these patients presented cognitive difficulties, but in fact this could be due to emotional disorders caused by physical differences, and that caused learning difficulties.
