Since 2018, 22 October has been International Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Day.

This date is celebrated with the aim of generating a greater degree of awareness about the importance of early detection of this syndrome.

This is a rare disease – chromosomeopathy – which translates into a change/mutation of chromosome 22. In addition to autistic spectrum behaviors, the main features of Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS) are global neurological, psychomotor and cognitive developmental delay, muscle hypotonia, high pain tolerance, accelerated growth, permanent need for chewing and biting, body temperature dysregulation, and delay or absence of speech.

There will be close to 30 diagnosed cases in our country.

Sporting Clube de Portugal joins the celebrations of this date, illuminating in green, on Friday, the José Alvalade Stadium and the João Rocha Pavilion. The same will happen in monuments, buildings and emblematic places, all over the world.
