Very positive first week for national colours at the Sudolympic Games

The first week of the Deaflympic Games provided excellent results for the Portuguese athletes present in the competition that is taking place in the Brazilian city of Caxias do Sul.

The judoka Joana Santos added, to the world title, the achievement of the gold medal in the category of -57 kg. After being the standard-bearer of the Portuguese delegation, at the opening ceremony, the Judo Clube do Algarve athlete, , arrives at the goal assumed, in her first participation in the -57 kg - before, competed in -63 kg. She is the only woman in a entourage of 12 Portuguese athletes present in the competition.

The cyclist André Soares was third in the time trial that corresponds to obtaining the bronze medal, in what is his debut in the Deaflympic Games.

In addition to these medals there is also the achievement of nine diplomas.

The Deaflympic Games are the second oldest sporting event in the world, with the first edition in 1924 in Paris, where 145 athletes from nine European countries competed. That year, this competition was the first sporting event for people with disabilities, especially the hearing impaired. This edition began on May 1st and will end next Sunday, May 15.
