The Portuguese Association of Imperfect Osteogenesis – APOI launched the International Day of Imperfect Osteogenesis (OI) campaign on 6 May.

This Campaign is part of a project with support from the INR, IP and it is intended that it can focus not only on public opinion, but also on health professionals. These campaigns are particularly important for us, as they allow us to disseminate the disease and raise community awareness of the difficulties that these patients have to deal with, namely difficulties of diagnosis, treatment, insecurity of future prospects and difficulties of adaptation and social integration.

It is also hoped that a global vision about this pathology will promote respect for "difference" and non-discrimination, active participation and integration of the person with OI in society; and respect for the autonomy and independence of IOs and persons with disabilities in general.

The Portuguese Association of Imperfect Osteogenesis – APOI is a national, voluntary and non-profit organisation dedicated to helping IO carriers. OI is a rare disease, mainly characterised by frequent bone deformation and fracture, either spontaneously or with minimal trauma, and is therefore also known as ‘glass bone disease’.
