Portugal attends the 2022 Madeira Paralympic Swimming World Championships

The World Swimming Championship Madeira 2022 of the World Para Swimming (WPS), will take place from 12 to 18 June 2022, in the Olympic Swimming Pools of Funchal and Portugal will be represented by 10 athletes.
Ana Castro, Daniel Videira, Diogo Cancela, Ivo Rocha, Jaime Catarino, João Campos, Marco Meneses, Renata Pinto, Susana Veiga and Tomás Cordeiro are the swimmers selected for the competition, which will bring together a total of 600 participants representing 70 countries.
This competition is organized by the Portuguese Swimming Federation (FPN) and World Para Swimming (WPS), in partnership with the Madeira Swimming Association (ANM). It is the first major competition in the sport after the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, held last summer due to the pandemic.
The national delegation also includes coaches Armando Costa, Carla Cardoso, Carlos Mota, Gonçalo Neves and Nuno Quintanilha, sports assistant coach Marco Calhando, physiotherapist Cláudia Pato, the technical elements of the Portuguese Swimming Federation, Mariett Matias and José Machado, and the Team Leader of the Paralympic Committee of Portugal, Inês Viegas.
José Manuel Lourenço, President of the Portuguese Paralympic Committee said that “The holding of the Madeira 2022 Paralympic Swimming World Championships in Funchal honours Portuguese sport and proves the national capacity to organise major sporting events. We are certain that all 10 swimmers selected will give their best on behalf of Portugal already on the way to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
António Silva, President of the Portuguese Swimming Federation stated that “It is with great pride that the Portuguese Swimming Federation organises the Madeira 2022 World Championships for Swimming Championships. For seven days the elite of adapted swimming will be concentrated in Madeira, competing in the largest adapted sport event after the Paralympic Games, in the certainty that the excellence of the organization will project the achievements of swimmers as well as the region of Madeira".
