The International Day of Imperfect Osteogenesis is celebrated on May 6.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a rare disease of genetic origin, characterized, mostly, by frequent deformations and fractures of the bones, impairing the correct formation of the same and making them abnormally fragile.

A person with this disease may have several dozen or even hundreds of fractures during their lifetime. It can range from mild to severe, and between 50% to 65% suffer hearing loss.

The cause of the disease is a deficiency in the production of type 1 collagen, the main constituent of bones, or proteins that participate in their processing. The result is the appearance of fairly severe osteoporosis.

There is still no definitive cure for this disease which is commonly known as ‘glass bone disease’.

On this day, people are encouraged to dress in yellow.
