AJanuary 22 is celebrated the Day of the Interpreter of Portuguese Sign Language (ILGP), this date refers to the foundation in Lisbon of the first Association of Portuguese Sign Language Interpreters (AILGP) in 1991.

These professionals establish the bridge of communication between Deaf people and hearing people, providing accessibility, autonomy and, above all, contributing to the inclusion of the Deaf Community in all contexts of life, such as education, health and leisure.

Law No 89/99 of 5 July 1999 defines Portuguese Sign Language Interpreters as ‘professionals who interpret and translate information from sign language into oral or written language and vice versa, in order to ensure communication between deaf and hearing persons’.

There are two national associations of Portuguese Sign Language Interpreters:

- a Association of Portuguese Sign Language Translators and Interpreters - ATILGP

- a National and Professional Association of Interpretation - Sign Language - ANAPI-LG

Congratulations to all, Portuguese Sign Language Interpreters who daily dedicate themselves to accessibility for deaf people!
