Legal framework of accessibility to buildings and establishments receiving public, public roads and residential buildings

The promotion of accessibility to the built environment and public space is a fundamental element for the quality of life of people, and is even an essential means to guarantee the exercise of their citizenship rights and to promote their civic participation.

The legal regime of accessibility to the built environment, approved by the Decree-Law No 163/2006On 8 August, it was amended by Decree-Law No 125/2017, of 4 October, having assigned to the National Institute for Rehabilitation a set of new competences originally attributed to the defunct Directorate-General for National Buildings and Monuments, which added new requirements and responsibilities to the scope of action of this Institute.

In Decree-Law No. 163/2006, of August 8, can be consulted the Technical Standards of Accessibility in force.
