Award of Technological Innovation Award Engineer Jaime Filipe

The public ceremony for the award of the Engineer Jaime Filipe Technological Innovation Award, 2024 edition, took place on the morning of May 30, at the Orlando Monteiro Auditorium, at the premises of the National Institute for Rehabilitation, INR.

In the opening speech, Marina Van Zeller, Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the INR, highlighted the diversity and excellence of the projects distinguished in this edition, while reflecting the spirit of innovation and overcoming challenges that we aim to multiply in Portugal.

This was followed by a discussion space on the importance of innovation for inclusion, moderated by Helena Alexandre, Director of Services of the Research, Training and Development Unit, UIFD, of the INR. After the technical presentation of the 2024 edition, the MagicContac application was released by Helena Caniça, from the Associação de Paralisia Cerebral de Lisboa, and by Daniel Freitas, from the MEO Foundation.

A tribute testimony by Lieutenant-Colonel António Neves, of the Association of the Disabled of the Armed Forces, ADFA, captivated all the people present, remembering Engineer Jaime Filipe and his legacy.

In a round table, moderated by Roxana Onofrei, from the National Institute of Industrial Property, INPI and member of the jury of the Prize, we know the distinguished projects and the future challenges of:

  • ‘O Mundo na Ponta do Dedo’ of the School of São Gonçalo – Group of Schools of São Gonçalo, Torres Vedras – Winner;
  • ‘One Arm For Margot’ by Renato Bispo and Ana Fatia – Honourable Mention;
  • ‘Halo: Silently Controlled Language Generation’ by Unbabel – Honourable Mention.

The awarded projects received a cash prize awarded in parity by the INR and the Musketeers Group, and also a piece of art delivered by Cristina Mendes, Deputy Director of CEARTE, Vocational Training Centre for Handicrafts and Heritage.

In closing words, Helena Alexandre, from INR, thanked all the partner entities and encouraged the projects distinguished in this edition to continue to walk the path of inclusion through technological and social innovation.

The Engineer Jaime Filipe Award for Technological Innovation is an inspiring example of how innovation can be a driver of social inclusion and transformation. The next edition of the Prize will be in 2026.
